THE "BALIO" GARDENS
The term "balio" comes from the word "Baiolo" meaning
the royal representative who, during the middle ages resided in the castle,
carrying out the function of civil judge and collecting taxes on behalf
of the king.
The garden was created in 1872 by count Agostino
Pepoli, who also paid for the renovations of the adjacent towers. His
park was based on the "English country garden" style, with lawns surrounded
with age-old boxwood hedges and sparse vegetation consisting mainly of
Mediterranean trees such as pine, ash, cypress, almond and oak.
Breathtaking views can be admired from any of the
panoramic viewpoints situated around the outskirts of the park.
