TRAPANI CATHEDRAL
The cathedral dates back to the 14th Century, it
was built in 1421 by Alfonso il Magnanimo and, over time has been subject
to some modifications
The cathedral has looked as it is today since 1748
when the architect G.B. Amico added the lateral chapels, the cupola, the
bell tower and the facade.
The neo-classical style stucco was realised by Girolamo Rizzo and Onofrio
Noto and the frescos were created by Vincenzo Manno.
The cathedral has three naves and within the cathedral
one can admire a depiction of the crucifixion by a flemish painter VanDyck,
a depiction of the death of christ in local stone known as the "incarnata"
by giacomo Tartaglia, a "padre eterna" by domenico di Bruna and "Saint
George" by Andrea Carreca.
The church was elevated to cathedral status on the
31st of May, 1884 by Gregorio XVI.
