LE FAVARE
Le Favare are steam emissions, reaching up to 100°C
which come out of cracks in the rock. Near these openings the rock is
a rich red brick colour due to the sulphurous anhydride and sulphuric
acid emissions.
This unusual colour can be seen from a distance.
The steam, on contact with the cooler air, condenses
into droplets of water which, through a primitive canalisation system
is collected in small rock pools and used to water farm animals.
At the "Favare Grande" the farmers have covered
the cracks with dry branches to improve the steam condensation.
