LA MATTANZA - The Tuna killing
La Mattanza takes place from the 2nd half of May
until around the 10th of June. During this period, the tuna follow the
currents from the ocean into the warmer Mediterranean to deposit and fertilise
their eggs.
For centuries, tuna fishermen have known this secret
and in mid-April they begin to set up a series of net barriers in the
sea. The tuna fish become trapped and are obliged to follow the direction
of the barriers straight into the tuna nets.
It is easy to take part, All you need to do is arrive
early in the morning on the quay from where the tuna fishermen sail. The
days of tuna fishing are uncertain as much depends on the sea currents,
however if you organise a stay of 3 days between mid May and the beginning
of June, you will certainly be ably to enjoy this unique experience.
